I’ve never really given serums a go. I’ve had a couple of samples in beauty boxes but I’ve never used them more than twice because they either felt sticky or like water or just a bit pointless. So when I was given the opportunity to try Dr. Nick Lowe’s The Secret is Out Lifting Super Serum I was a mixture of sceptical and excited. I think I’ve made it quite clear recently that I’ve had some trouble with my skin and that I’ve been dedicating a considerable amount of time and effort into improving it so I had high hopes for this addition.
Let’s, as always, start with packaging. It comes in a really attractive frosted, light blue glass bottle with a frost white lid and a rounded nozzle. It’s quite a heavy piece of packaging so taking it on your travels might be a little difficult but otherwise, I really like it. I also like the fact that you can clearly see your usage; something I’m a stickler for.
The serum itself is quite thick and I was a bit afraid of it at first. It doesn’t smell very nice, a little bit like lighter fuel if I’m honest but it’s not a heavy smell and it doesn’t linger on your skin so it’s not a problem. It melts onto the skin so it’s really easy to spread but I have found that I need at least two big pumps to cover my whole face.
I’m going to break my experience into two sections: instant effect and lasting.
Directions are to apply the serum on cleansed skin and to allow it to absorb into the skin before moisturising. Applying directly onto the skin rather than over moisturisers means you can feel the full texture and this is what I am most impressed with. It feels like liquid pearls. I can’t think of another way to describe it. It feels like a really luxurious primer and it makes your skin look wonderful too. It does feel a little heavy on the skin at first but after it has fully absorbed, you can barely feel it and it makes your skin feel like satin. It not only feels like a primer, it has actually made my skin look like I’ve applied a high quality primer too. It evens out the skin tone, smooths the skin and I’ve actually been using my primer less because my pores look smaller and I have a great base for makeup due to the serum. So purely on aesthetics, I would recommend it.
When it comes to lasting, I can’t comment too much because I’ve only been using it for about three weeks but I will say that in that time I have seen an improvement in my skin. I have been applying it morning and night and my skin is healthier, brighter and any dryness I previously had has disappeared. My cheeks feel a bit tighter, my pores are smaller and overall, this has convinced me that serums are essential in a daily routine.
There are minor faults: as I’ve said the smell and I have used a fair amount in my trial period but otherwise I really like this product and they’re such tiny issues that they’re easily forgotten.
And, it’s actually quite an inexpensive product. For the results that I’ve had, £25.52 for a 100ml bottle is pretty reasonable. I should imagine that with my current usage it will last me about five months so it’s a pretty decent investment and one I would recommend for all ages.
If you do want to purchase this you, can do so in most Boots stores or online.
